Alexander dies by command of the Western Emperor, Maximilian: he is the first martyr from Bergamo and his sacrifice will not go to waste. The legend goes that Grata collects Alexander’s bleeding head and lilies blossom from his head, a premonition of beauty and goodness. This is way the the Christian and secular history wanted to make it overlap with the beginning of the first community in Bergamo, based on the principles of solidarity, peace and equality constituting the basics of any society, regardless of religious faith or geographical ethnic group.
Comparing these values to today’s world, we wante to make a “route of peace” that implies, as in the story of Saint Alexander, a commitment in concrete terms and built by “men of good will, believers and non-believers... because we have to look at a world without boundaries and without “blocks”, that does not belong neither to the West nor to East, where all nations, all political commumities try to dialogue, to negotiate. Looking for what joins us, leaving out what divides”.

These words were spoken sixteen centuries after the Alexander’s martyrdom by John XXIII that marked and changed the world thanks to the works of many “peace  builders”, according to a definition by Karol Wojtyla.

But how many men and women have followed these messages of solidarity, peace and equality and realized in the territory of Bergamo as well as in the world? Many. The authors want to tell about some of them through a dialogue about giving and giving one to each other, life stories we are sometimes more aware of, others of whom we know only the name of the protagonists because of the name of a street o because of a Nobel prize assignment.
