The story
It’s Alexander’s last life instants, the door of the cell opens wide, a man older than he, a pretor, comes into. The pretor pursues him, tempts him, shows him the absurdity of his choice. He tells him: “Have you seen the sun shining on the fields, a few minutes ago when you were walking to come here … Don’t you want to see it again?” And Alexander looks at the pretor in a defenceless way and answers: “I want to see it again”. Power fears martyrs, knows that their blood does not kill off faith but nourish. Power suggests compromise, agreements. As fas as possible. Alexander has been captured in the middle of Diocletian persecution, has been condamned by the Emperor Maximilian. He refused to sacrifice his idols, refused the compromise suggested by the West emperor. He has managed to escape from prison, has left Milan, has come to Bergamo, has brought Christ’s word. Then he has been recognized and captured. Anyway until the end power woos him and in extremis tries to avoid his martyrdom. “So is yours a love God? Do you think that a father may want the death of his son, Alexander?”.
